Progressive Web Apps vs Native Mobile Apps: Which Should You Build?

A clear comparison of progressive web apps and native mobile apps to help you choose the right approach for your users and budget.

The two approaches

A native app is built specifically for a platform, Android or iOS, and distributed through an app store. A progressive web app (PWA) is a web application that can be installed to the home screen, works offline to a degree, and can send notifications, all while being delivered through the browser. Both can give users a good experience, but they have different costs and trade-offs.

Advantages of progressive web apps

  • One codebase works on Android, iOS and desktop, which lowers development and maintenance cost.
  • Users reach the app through a link, with no app store download required.
  • Updates are instant, because everyone uses the latest version on the server.
  • Pages are discoverable by search engines, which helps people find you.
  • Caching lets key screens keep working on slow or unreliable connections.

Advantages of native apps

  • Full access to device features such as advanced camera controls, sensors, Bluetooth and background processing.
  • Smoother performance for graphics-heavy or very interactive experiences.
  • Presence in app stores, which some audiences use to discover and trust apps.
  • More consistent push notification and background behaviour on some platforms.

Cost and time

Building two native apps, one for Android and one for iOS, means two codebases or a cross-platform framework, store submissions and ongoing store compliance. A PWA is typically faster and cheaper to build and to keep updated. For many business tools, portals and content-driven services, this difference is decisive, especially for a young product that still needs to find its audience.

Consider your users

In markets where many people use lower-cost phones with limited storage and expensive mobile data, a lightweight app delivered through the browser is often more appealing than a large download. Ask what your users already do: if they primarily open links shared on WhatsApp or search on their phones, a PWA fits naturally.

When to choose which

Choose a PWA when your product is mainly forms, content, dashboards, bookings, orders or account management; when you want to launch quickly and cheaply; or when reach matters more than deep device integration. Choose native when you rely on heavy device hardware, need advanced offline or background behaviour, or your market expects an app store presence. A common path is to launch as a PWA, learn from real usage and build a native app later if the evidence justifies it.

A hybrid option

Some projects use a thin native wrapper around a web application, which gives store distribution while sharing most of the code. We used this kind of approach in a farm advisory system that is available both as a web app and as an Android app.
